Epidemiology and Transmission of Theileria orientalis in Australasia

Oriental theileriosis, a disease primarily impacting cattle is caused by an apicomplexan hemoprotozoan parasite, Theileria orientalis. It has now become established in the Australasia region. The organism was long considered benign cause of persistent infections; however, increase clinical outbreaks since 2006 eastern Australian states and New Zealand associated with identification pathogenic Ikeda (Type 2) Chitose 1) genotypes. Unlike T. parva annulate, which target leucocytes, manifestation orientalis due to its effects on erythrocytes, infection sometimes designated as bovine anemia (TABA). In Australia Zealand, tick Haemaphysalis longicornis principal vector, though other species are also likely vectors. endemic status genotypes areas low or absent populations apparent paradox that may be attributable alternative modes transmission, such mechanical transmission hematophagous insects (lice, mosquitoes, biting flies), vertical via iatrogenic means.
